Bailie, 60, underwent emergency surgery to repair her savaged face
after she was viciously attacked by her neighbour’s dog.
Police have now seized the animal following the attack last Wednesday, the Daily Record reported. She was unable to fend off the dog and her distraught daughter, Leanne, 30, had to prise it from her mum’s face. The
attack happened after Sylvia had attended a funeral and went back to
neighbours Pat Mahon and fiancé Leanne McHugh’s flat in Paisley.
The dog pounced on her before sinking its teeth into her face when she went to leave at around 7pm.
Retired Sylvia, who is 5ft 7” and of slim build, collapsed after Leanne pulled off the Akita.
Paramedics were called but as Sylvia was rushed to hospital, the
ambulance crew had to stop twice as her blood pressure fell dangerously
low.
Sylvia was taken to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley,
then transferred to Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital where
specialists battled to save her face.
After having 13 stitches
to hold her face back together and undergoing an emergency operation on
Thursday, Sylvia is now being fed through a tube.
Her brother, Steven Pursley, 56, has called on the dog to be put down following the horrific injuries sustained by his sister.
He said: “My sister is lying in a hospital bed with half of her face hanging off.
“I want the dog destroyed before this happens to someone else.
“Her injuries are horrendous, it’s absolutely heartbreaking for her.
“Part of her face was left just hanging off.
“I just can’t stop thinking about the size of that dog and the size of its teeth in her face.”
The Akita is a large breed of dog which comes from a line of ancient
Japanese hunting dogs that have historically been used as fighting dogs
as well as bear and deer hunters.
They are large and powerful and not recommended for first-time owners and are said to be extremely protective.
