Saudi Women Demand Abolishment of Male Guardianship System

Women in Saudi Arabia are demanding an end to the country's male guardianship system. BBC reports that over 14,000 Saudi women have signed an anti-guardianship petition which has been handed to the government. The petition was delivered to the government by Activist Aziza Al-Yousef.

Under the Saudi Arabia male guardianship system, a woman must have permission from her father, brother or other male relative - or in the case of a widow, sometimes her son - to obtain a passport, work, go to university, marry or leave the country.
