Four people were killed when a medical transport plane headed to
Oakland with a patient and three others aboard crashed Friday morning in
Humboldt County, officials said.
The twin-engine Piper PA-31 Cheyenne was en route from Crescent City,
in Del Norte County near the Oregon border, when its pilot reported
smoke filling the cockpit about 1 a.m., said Ian Gregor, a spokesman for
the Federal Aviation Administration.
The problem was reported about 30 minutes after takeoff, according to
a statement from REACH Air Medical Services, which operates the Cal-Ore
Life Flight plane. The pilot indicated he was going to try to fly back to Crescent City,
but the FAA lost radar contact with the plane when it was about 5 miles
northeast of the Arcata-Eureka Airport.- sfgate
